Steelers Cut Reed, Add Suisham

16 11 2010

In an uncharacteristic move on Tuesday, the Steelers have cut long-time kicker, Jeff Reed and inserted Shaun Suisham

This is surprising on two fronts. First, the Steelers typically do not make quick moves on players having a rough season, especially ones that are tops in the NFL (Reed entered this year in the top-10 in NFL history for accuracy). Secondly, to be honest, Suisham just isn’t that good as he has been cut several times, but had a decent year in 2009 –his last full year of kicking– hitting 83.3% (20/24)of his field goal attempts.

Reed’s  rapid release has more to do with the combination of Reeds off-field issues –griping about contracts, Heinz Field and fans– than the team is letting be known. Tomlin stated, per NFL.com, “It’s unlike other positions where you can simply bench someone and go to their backup.” He then added “There’s only one kicker on a football team, so you don’t make a decision lightly when you have to make a move. We’re very respectful of the cumulative body of work by Jeff here, but at this time we felt it was appropriate to make a change.”

So the Steelers end the run of their most consistent kicker since Gary Anderson and begin a new era, lets hope this doesn’t turn into the revolving door for kickers, like there was after Anderson left… Suisham is not the long-term answer, so look for some open competition next season.
